The reason that we can say that the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is “all-new” is because it really doesn’t share anything in common with the Corolla sedan that’s currently on sale here in the U.S. The Corolla Hatchback is based on the European version of the car, which Toyota calls the Auris. It rides on a brand-new platform — Toyota’s global architecture — and it’s an improvement in pretty much every single way over the current Corolla sedan.

Under the hood of the Corolla Hatchback is a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower. That’s a 31-hp improvement over the outgoing Corolla iM. That car felt a bit sluggish, but this car doesn’t. The bigger changes to the powertrain — for me — actually come with the transmissions.

There will be two available transmissions on the hatchback: a continuously variable transmission or a six-speed manual. Both get changes that make them a bit more drivable and a bit easier to live with. Starting with the CVT: It is a CVT, but at the bottom of it is what we call a “fixed gear.” Essentially what it has is a 1st gear that behaves like 1st gear in a traditional automatic transmission, which gives it better off-the-line acceleration. One of the big complaints about CVTs is that they have a rubber-band feel that makes them really bad from a stop. In the Corolla Hatchback, acceleration . Show full review

In the Corolla Hatchback, acceleration from a stop feels much more linear and the car feels much more responsive.

The bigger change comes with the six-speed manual transmission. The Corolla iM also offered a six-speed manual, but it wasn’t a good one. The clutch action was sloppy, the throws were long and the gates weren’t very good. It was so bad that it actually made me prefer the automatic version. In the hatchback, it’s been cleaned up; the clutch action is more linear and the gates are more well-defined. It’s an easier manual to drive.

It also comes with two features that you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a Toyota manual. The first is downshift rev-matching. When you shift down, the engine will rev up to match the new gear, which smooths out downshifts. The second feature is an anti-stall feature; if the car detects a potential stall in 1st gear, it will increase the revs automatically to prevent one from occurring.

If you have been watching for the newer Toyota vehicles, you may have come across the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Which, by itself really isn’t that strange, except for the fact that the 2018 Corolla hatchback was actually called the Corolla iM. So what’s the difference between the two? Essentially, it just got a name change, but there are a few features of the 2019 Corolla Hatchback that the 2018 Corolla iM doesn’t have. Let’s check it out!

As you can see in the table above, the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback has an additional trim. So, you’ll have a bit more wiggle room when looking for different specs and features on the Corolla Hatchback. The 2019 Corolla Hatchback also has a bit more power, and more room for the front cabin driver and passenger. You’ll also have the Smart Key System standard in the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, which wasn’t even available on the 2018 Corolla iM.

For the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, you’ll also have more driver-assist technologies than the 2018 Corolla iM, so you can look forward to the Toyota Safety Sense® P, and all of the features it provides.

You can have either a CVT or a manual transmission for the Corolla Hatchback, which is something that hasn’t really changed since the 2018 Corolla iM, though in the Corolla Hatchback, the CVT is a Dynamic-Shift CVT, while in the Corolla iM it’s a CVTi-S. Other constant features include the rear split folding bench seats to help increase cargo space, and the Bluetooth® connectivity.

The 2018 Toyota Corolla iM Interior

With its comfort and convenience, the Corolla iM cabin provides you and your passengers with an enhanced experience from top to bottom. One particularly noteworthy aspect of comfort is the standard Dual Zone Automatic Climate Control that features pushbutton controls as well as a dust and pollen filter. There’s also the 6-way adjustable driver’s seat and 4-way adjustable front passenger seat.

In terms of convenience, the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM comes standard with a 7-inch touch-screen display so you can easily access whatever it is you need without having to divert your attention from the drive at hand. For even more convenience, the USB 2.0 port with iPod connectivity and control, advanced voice recognition, hands-free phone capability, and Bluetooth® wireless technology are all standard features that keep everyone on board entertained and fully connected mile for mile.

2018 Toyota Corolla Vs Toyota Corolla iM

Maybe the oldest debate in the book is city vs country. The two, after all, couldn’t be more different. In the city, you have rent, and pavement, and delicious (but expensive) restaurants. In the country, you have land, and pastures, and charming diners with a waitress named LeAnn who knows your order down to the half-regular/half-decaf coffee you like.

The city is full of people on a mission – rushing to complete the next task, and get to the next exciting event. Country life is about taking your time, appreciating what’s around you, and letting your mind wander off into itself enjoying nothing but the sights and sounds around you.

It’s long been understood that what makes a car great for city driving, usually gets in the way of it being any fun out on the open road. Features like fuel-efficiency, smaller size, and wide visibility that shine in the concrete jungle, just aren’t as fun as cruising at top gear in a sports car or pickup truck out in God’s country.

With their 2018 compact line, however, Toyota has heard the silent disappointment of drivers everywhere. Both the 2018 Toyota Corolla and the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM empower drivers to own their commute, while simultaneously including performance and capacity specs that make them a back-roads blast.

Toyota Corolla Sedan Vs Hatchback

Although the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM comes with the fun iM appendix, it’s a worthy member of the iconic Toyota Corolla name. Both the 2018 Toyota Corolla and the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM carry the name of one of Toyota’s longest running lines in the United States. Both include Toyota Safety Sense – C (TSS-C) to provide drivers with important and advanced safety technology.

The primary difference drivers will notice between the 2018 Toyota Corolla and the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM is the body style. Having both been redesigned for last year, the 2018 Toyota Corolla and 2018 Toyota Corolla iM feature sedan and hatchback bodystyles, respectively. Drivers interested in a more conventional aesthetic will love the four-door Corolla for its classic Toyota design, albeit with an assertive front fascia and grille.

The 2018 Toyota Corolla iM will be prized by drivers who enjoy both a sporty appearance, and the extra cargo room provided by a 5-door car. How much extra cargo room? Over 7 cubic-feet! For this reason, the Corolla iM is likely to have a wider appeal for weekend warriors, musicians, pet owners, and drivers who prefer extra visible space during their travels.

Similarities and Differences Between the 2018 Toyota Corolla and 2018 Toyota Corolla iM

Beside the exterior styling, which drivers will notice first and foremost, the 2018 Toyota Corolla and 2018 Toyota Corolla iM feature subtle differences that mark their more unique applications. The 2018 Toyota Corolla iM offers more roll stiffness in its suspension, and an independent rear suspension (diverging from the sedan’s beam axle).

Although both vehicles feature a zippy 1.8L 4-cylinder engine. they differ on their standard transmissions. The 2018 Toyota Corolla offers a conservative CVT, while (in another indication of targeted demographics) the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM provides a fun, performance-minded 6-speed manual transmission. A CVT is available as an option on the iM.

The Corolla provides a slightly higher EPA-estimated 32 combined mpg, over the iM’s 30.

Technology and safety features are consistent between the two. You can read about the tech and safety features of the 2018 Toyota Corolla here.

Why Not Call it the 2018 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?

That’s a great question, with an interesting answer. Unlike older Corolla models which offered both sedan and hatchback styles, the exterior styling of the 2018 Toyota Corolla and 2018 Toyota Corolla iM differs pretty significantly. This is because the Corolla iM was rolled into Toyota’s line, from child company Scion when Toyota decided to discontinue the youth-focused Scion brand in 2016.

The distinct appearance of the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM is a good reason for Toyota to classify the vehicle separately. Although we don’t have official word from Toyota on this, it’s a pretty safe bet that this was done in an effort to not sell two cars with different exterior elements under the same model name.

At first glance, it would be easy to assume that the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM is just a hatchback version of the iconic Toyota Corolla. By taking a deeper look, you can see they have some pretty unique applications. One thing is for sure, both will give you the performance and fun you want – whether your journey is an urban escapade, or a country cruise.

Is the Corolla iM Just a Hatchback Corolla?

At first glance, it may seem that the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM is simply a reimagined Toyota Corolla with a hatchback body style. A closer look, however, reveals some changes which may push uncertain drivers one way or the other. Despite similar 1.8L 4-cylinder engines, for instance, the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM manages to edge the 2018 Toyota Corolla by 5 horsepower (137-hp, vs 132-hp respectively).

Drivers looking for a more sporty, open-roads driving experience will appreciate the inclusion of an available 6-speed manual transmission (with overdrive) on the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM, while the 2018 Toyota Corolla receives Toyota’s capable 2-speed CVT (with overdrive).

These performance-focused improvements do take a toll on efficiency. The 2018 Toyota Corolla manages to hand the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM it’s first L with an EPA-estimated combined MPG of 32 (vs the iM’s 30). The most obvious point of divergence between the two models is the body-style. How does the 5th-door affect cargo capacity in the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM? How about an extra 7 cubic-feet with the zippy hatchback?

Likely at the heart of Toyota’s decision to maintain the iM moniker, exterior and interior design differences go beyond body-style. Contrasting the mature and conservative front of the 2018 Toyota Corolla, the grille, fascia, and bumper of the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM provide support more aggressive, sporty ethos. Performance fans will appeciate the less sensible, but more exciting 5.5″ ground clearance (a full 1.2″ lower than the 2018 Toyota Corolla).
