Nissan Sentra
Sunny.

The 2016 Nissan Sentra compact sedan gets a slew of upgrades this year, adding to its already impressive qualities of feeling more upscale, bigger and roomier than its reasonable price tag suggests. In addition to offering tons of interior space with a surprisingly large back seat, the Sentra this year gets refreshed styling, with a new nose and tail, and an upgraded interior. There are other improvements, such as additional sound deadening, a suspension that’s slightly stiffer, and advanced electronics like adaptive cruise control. Yet it does all this while undercutting competitors like the new Honda Civic, Ford Focus and many others, sometimes by thousands of dollars.
The 2016 Nissan Sentra is a daily commuter, unconcerned with brisk acceleration or razor-sharp cornering. It’s quiet, thanks to the additional sound deadening, and the 4-cylinder engine only makes its presence known at full throttle, and even that’s not so loud thanks to the addition of Nissan’s D-Step logic to the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), which mimics a standard transmission under heavy loads. The suspension got slightly stiffer this year, but just enough to give the ride a more planted feel, not actually make it sporty or anything. Instead, SL and SR models can be ordered with a Technology package that includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow function; turn it on, and you can leave the car to monitor its own speed, even in stop-and-go traffic. We’d prefer more than the 130 horsepower the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder musters, but commuters will probably like the prospect of 40 mpg more.
INTELLIGENT CRUISE CONTROL
New to the Sentra this year, Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control – available on Sentra SL and SR models – takes the pain out of commuting by bringing the car to a stop in heavy traffic. Click the «resume» button, and you’ll be back up to speed in no time.
EASY FILL TIRE ALERT
Nissan cleverly integrates its tire-pressure-monitoring system to the horn. The upshot is that if you’re filling your tire, the horn will honk when the proper pressure is achieved. It’s super simple and handy, and the only question is why everybody doesn’t do this.
The Sentra already had one of the nicest interiors in the compact-sedan class, and the 2016 Sentra is even better. New are piano-black accents, better sound deadening, a 5-inch color LED info screen between the main gauges, and an improved audio-system interface. But as comfortable as the front seats are, the rear seats are a surprising highlight. There’s plenty of room for tall passengers, and the Sentra offers a ton of legroom. The trunk is equally huge, and there’s a reason why: According to the EPA’s classification system, there’s so much room in the Sentra that it’s actually a midsize.
The 2016 Sentra’s exterior styling closely mimics the recently updated Nissan Altima; think of it as «Smalltima» if you like. The new headlights and grille treatment are more dramatic, but avoid making sporty promises the car can’t keep, and SL and SR trim levels get LED low-beam headlights as well. Additionally, all models get new wheel designs. The rest of the car is untouched, and that’s fine. We like the smoothly sculpted sheet metal, which manages to hold your attention without being flashy or overdone.
The most basic 2016 Nissan Sentra is the S, and it comes with a 6-speed manual, three driving modes – Eco, Normal and Sport – and standard air conditioning. It’s also equipped with Bluetooth phone and audio integration, a USB port, keyless entry and truck release, electroluminescent gauges, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, auto headlights, and an audio system with four speakers. For extra cargo space the rear seatbacks fold in a 60/40 split. On the safety front, all Sentras get a modern complement of active and passive safety features including six airbags and electronic stability and traction controls.
The 2016 Sentra SL is the top dog, but the Sentra SR also comes with the LED low-beam headlights, alloy wheels and keyless ignition, and it can be equipped with the same upgraded audio system that includes an 8-inch screen and navigation. A technology package for the SR and SL includes adaptive cruise control and forward emergency braking. The mid-level Sentra SV offers a Driver’s Assist package, which adds navigation, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and SiriusXM traffic. An FE+ S model adds underbody panels, low-rolling-resistance tires, and a drivetrain optimized to achieve up to 40 mpg on the highway.
The 2016 Nissan Sentra comes with just one engine: a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder that, with only 130 horsepower, is among the least powerful in the class. But no matter, the continuously variable automatic transmission it comes with works its magic to get the Sentra up to speed with little fuss, and passing power is fine as long as you plan a heartbeat ahead. There is a 6-speed manual transmission available, but only on the base model, and it actually hurts fuel economy, rather than helping it. We’d say skip the FE+ grade, since it only gets one highway mile per gallon more than the regular Sentra (40 mpg is much sexier than 39) and many features aren’t available on it.
1.8-liter inline-4
130 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm (124 horsepower w/CA emissions)
128 lb-ft of torque @ 3,600 rpm (125 lb-ft w/CA emissions)
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/36 mpg (manual), 29/39 mpg (automatic), 30/40 mpg (automatic w/FE+ trim)
The 2016 Nissan Sentra S with a manual transmission comes with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of about $17,600, including the $835 destination charge. On the other side of the pricing spectrum, the Sentra SL with the technology package comes out to just under $25,400, which is a pretty solid bargain for a car with adaptive cruise, blind-spot detection and forward emergency braking. Prices are on the lower side for the segment, undercutting cars like the Honda Civic and Ford Focus, but coming in a bit higher than the Kia Forte. As a long-term prospect, the 2016 Sentra’s resale value is about average for the compact-sedan class, but its solidity and refinement make it feel like it’s worth more. Be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the 2016 Sentra.
Small overlap front: driver-side
Rating applies to 2015-19 models
Tested vehicle: 2015 Nissan Sentra SV 4-door
The Nissan Sentra was redesigned for the 2013 model year. Beginning with 2015 models, the front-end structure as well as the A-pillar and door sill were modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes. Also, the side curtain airbags were lengthened.
Action shot taken during the small overlap frontal crash test.
The dummy’s position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver’s survival space was maintained well.
The frontal and side curtain airbags worked well together to keep the head from coming close to any stiff structure or outside objects that could cause injury.
The driver’s space was maintained well, and risk of injuries to the dummy’s legs and feet was low.

What’s New for 2016?
Many of the exterior features of the 2016 Nissan Sentra, such as the headlights and grille, have undergone an emboldening redesign. The front seats, widely reviewed as stiff and uncomfortable in the 2015 model, have been updated to be more accommodating. Nissan has also added optional power functions for the driver’s seat.
Top 10 Reasons to Buy a 2016 Nissan Sentra – The Pros
1) Superior Crash Test Ratings
The 2016 Nissan Sentra has once again received the designation of “top safety pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Experts agree that this vehicle exhibits exceptional crash test performance. A strong safety rating makes this car an excellent choice for young drivers and families.
2) Great Gas Mileage
Depending on the trim selected, the 2016 Sentra can travel up to 32 miles on a gallon of fuel with combined city and highway driving. The base model with 6-speed manual transmission provides slightly lower fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, the I4 FE+ S with continuously variable transmission, or CVT, receives the best MPG ratings.
3) Ample Leg Room
Though surprising for a compact car, the Sentra’s roomy interior is old news for anyone familiar with this make and model. Of course, being able to stretch out is always good news. The 2016 model continues the legacy, making this compact vehicle ideal for families.
4) Spacious Trunk
Another area in which Nissan never seems to hold back is its Sentra’s trunk space. The 2016 model boasts just over 15 cubic feet of trunk volume.
Owners may enjoy the extra space by
- buying groceries in bulk;
- transporting small furniture; and
- tailgating at a local sporting event.
5) Ergonomic Front Seats
This car was made to go the distance, so its seats should, too. Fortunately, the fully adjustable front seats in the 2016 Nissan Sentra have been designed to form to the driver’s body. Front-seat heating is also an option.
6) Blind Spot Monitor/Alert
A major cause of freeway car crashes is failing to check the blind spot. Not only does the 2016 Nissan Sentra constantly monitor the blind spot, but it also alerts drivers to traffic crossing behind the car. This technology gives drivers more peace of mind when backing out of a driveway or merging onto the freeway.
7) Voice Recognition for SV and Up
Hands-free calling and texting are just a few of the life-saving benefits of in-car voice recognition. Starting with the SV trim package, Nissan has focused on compatibility with Apple devices, integrating Siri Eyes Free software alongside a 5-inch touch screen and information panel. This upgrade is well worth considering for any busy professional.
8) Base-Standard 6-Speed Manual Transmission
Standard manual transmission is becoming rarer each passing year. For drivers who prefer to change gears themselves, Nissan has become a go-to car brand. The availability of a manual base model is especially significant in the United States as automatic transmissions have all but saturated the market.
9) Intuitive Continuously Variable Transmission
Each year, Nissan fine-tunes its CVT even more to be more responsive and offer a smoother overall ride. With the traditional automatic, drivers can sometimes feel the gears catch at certain speeds as the system decides whether or not to shift into the next gear. CVT is also called “stepless” due to its more flexible and fluid gear ratios.
10) Smooth Power Steering
Responsive yet fluid steering is an important feature for many drivers. The steering in the 2016 Sentra just toes the line between stiff and sensitive. With average driving habits, this system makes all the right micro-adjustments based on speed and acceleration to maintain a reasonably smooth ride.

Reasons Not to Buy a 2016 Nissan Sentra – The Cons
1) Sluggish Acceleration
The biggest complaint among test drivers of the 2016 Sentra is its under-powered engine. For consumers who value performance over safety and fuel economy, this vehicle falls short. In fact, taking more than 10 seconds to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour, this car is one of the slowest on the market.
2) Expensive Upgrades
Consumers with tighter budgets may be disappointed to discover that many of the Sentra’s conveniences are just out of reach for them. While price is entirely subjective, many reviewers have commented that they would like to see more of the following upgrades become standard features:
- Power driver’s seat functions
- Heated front seats
- Base-model CVT
3) Average Reliability Ratings
The Nissan Sentra, in general, has performed just adequately against the market for a number of years when it comes to reliability. With the 2016 model, there is little reason to expect a vast improvement in these ratings. Of course, as with any new model, only time will tell.
How the 2016 Nissan Sentra Stacks Up to the Competition:
This model is far from being the leader of the pack in the compact sedan market; the 2016 Mazda3 and 2016 Honda Civic leave the Sentra in the dust. The poor acceleration in the 2016 Nissan Sentra will most certainly frustrate frequent highway drivers.
Conclusion:
Making the trade-off of an underachieving motor for superior safety may make the occasional frustration worthwhile in the event of an accident. The 2016 Nissan Sentra also has a number of trims and options available to improve its comfort. This car is best suited for families who simply want to travel from point A to point B safely.
