Driving Impressions

The Renegade is refined enough on paved roads. We prefer the 1.4-liter turbo engine with front-wheel drive in the city, even with its manual gearbox. It’s lighter and more direct than the 2.4-liter.

The Trailhawk feels ponderous around town where handling is tight, because of its additional weight.

Off road, the Renegade is no Wrangler, but with its modes for Mud, Sand, and Snow, it’s quite remarkable. We drove it up steep and rutty hills, nearly 45 degrees, and back down again using the hill descent control to control the speed, and grip at each wheel. The little Jeep will cross streams and climb boulders almost as tall as its wheels. No worries about getting it muddy, or getting to the other side of the bog.

The Trailhawk has one inch more ground clearance and bumpers that allow steeper approach and descent angles. There’s also a Rock mode, which enables the Trailhawk to crawl along at less-than-walking speed, a great feature.

The Jeep Renegade Trailhawk features Active Drive Low and Rock Mode for the Selec-Terrain Traction Management system—modes exclusive to the Trailhawk.

The 2.4L Tigershark MultiAir two engine comes standard with 4×4 capability. This is one off-roading vehicle that won’t back down from a challenge! With 180 horsepower and up to 29 MPG, the Trailhawk is ready to climb rocks or cruise in the city.

The Jeep Renegade was introduced in the 2015 model year. Beginning with 2015 models built after July 2015, the vehicle’s front-end structure and front door hinges were modified to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes. At the same time, the computer software was modified to optimize frontal airbag and seat belt pretensioner impact sensing. (Information about when a specific vehicle was manufactured is on the certification label typically affixed to the car on the driver door or adjacent B-pillar.)

Компактный внедорожник Jeep Renegade, мировая премьера которого состоялась на Женевском автосалоне 2014, стал первой моделью марки, производство которой наладили за пределами США.

Экстерьер

Спереди автомобиль получил большие круглые фары, которые немного убраны под крышку капота, а также фирменную решетку радиатора с семью вертикальными прорезями. Благодаря этим решениям «мордашка» у Ренегата получилась довольно симпатичной.

Благодаря характерным трапециям колесных арок в профиль Renegade напоминает классический Jeep Willys 1941, при этом смотрится автомобиль вполне себе самобытно.

Jeep Renegade получил крышу MySky, состоящую из двух съемных панелей, так что при желании внедорожник можно превратить в своеобразный кабриолет. Ну а сзади у машины установлены квадратные фонари, форма которых чем-то напоминает армейские канистры.

Цветовая палитра модели представлена 11 различными цветами, причем 9 из них идут с черной крышей. На колесах по умолчанию установлены стальные 16-дюймовые диски, однако за доплату клиент может выбрать один из нескольких 17- и 18-дюймовых вариантов. В общем, возможности по кастомизации внешнего вида впечатляют.

Салон

Водительская дверь на Джип Ренегат 2017 распахивается практически на 90 градусов, обеспечивая максимально удобную посадку в салон. Внутри достаточно просторно, и водительское сиденье с большим диапазоном продольной регулировки позволяет с комфортом разместиться человеку среднего роста.

Сзади места также хватает, однако подушка дивана жестковата, да и его плоская спинка также не способствует комфортной посадке, так что при длительных поездках пассажирам придется не сладко.

Интерьер модели имеет несколько вариантов исполнения. Так, машину можно заказать как с темным, так и с бело-оранжевым оформлением, который наверняка придется по нраву представительницам слабого пола.

Прямо перед водителем расположен большой цветной дисплей с возможностью полной индивидуализации, по бокам которого разместились аналоговые спидометр и тахометр. Смотрится такая комбинация приборов достаточно стильно и лаконично.

В зависимости от комплектации, Jeep Renegade 2016-2017 оснащается мультимедийной системой UConnect с 5,0- или 6,5-дюймовым сенсорным экраном, над которым красуется надпись «Since 1941», что является очередной отсылкой к старичку Виллису.

К мультимедийке легко подключить смартфон с помощью интерфейса Bluetooth, а управлять ее функционалом можно как с тачпада, так и с кнопок на руле. Заметим, что развлекательный комплекс с 6,5-дюймовым дисплеем идет с навигацией, которая радует приятной графикой карт и информативностью.

Характеристики

Будучи построенным на платформе компактвэна Fiat 500L, Джип Ренегат достигает в длину, ширину и высоту 4 236, 1 805 и 1 667 мм соответственно. Колесная база модели равна 2 570 миллиметров. Во-вторых, в модели применена иная схема подвески, где спереди и сзади установлена независимая подвеска типа МакФерсон. Что касается тормозов, то на передних колесах они дисковые вентилируемые, а на задних — просто дисковые.

На российском рынке автомобиль предлагается только с 1,4-литровыми бензиновыми турбомоторами, развивающими 140 и 170 л.с. Базовый движок работает в связке с шестиступенчатым роботом, при этом версия с такой «начинкой» имеет передний привод. А вот 170-сильному Ренегату полагаются 9-диапазонный автомат и полный привод.

Итало-американский Jeep Renegade получил также систему выбора режимов движения, которые достаточно сильно отличаются друг от друга, позволяя водителю адаптировать автомобиль под различные климатические и дорожные условия.

Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 2017 review

Talking points

  • Very capable off-road.
  • Distinctive styling.
  • Gear changes erratic at times.
  • Roomy cabin but some vision issues.

The Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, the only four-wheel-drive model in the Renegade range, has crossed the Rubicon but that has nothing to do with invading Italy. The Rubicon trail is a challenging off-road track in California and is used by Jeep as a benchmark for off-road performance. It awards the ‘Trail-Rated’ epithet to those models capable of completing the course.

Trailhawk is fitted with a 129kW/230Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that’s unique to this variant. Putting the power down is a nine-speed automatic transmission driving an on-demand four-wheel-drive system. Unfortunately we found Trailhawk wasn’t totally at ease with this gearbox. From time to time the shift would be a little erratic and on occasions take-off was less than smooth. Although we didn’t take it off-road, the Renegade Trailhawk is clearly very capable in the rough stuff. It has a very respectable 211-millimetre ground clearance and excellent approach and departure angles of 30.5° and 34.3° respectively, which firmly marks it as the real deal.

Unfortunately you pay for this off-road hardware at the bowser. We averaged 9.87L/100km, which is hardly frugal.

Brand awareness

Being Trail-Rated is not something Jeep wants you to miss on the Trailhawk, with large badges telling you as much. In fact, the quantity of self-referential logos and branding on this vehicle is breathtaking. Many are a stylised rendition of the iconic Jeep grille plastered over virtually every surface, but a few are more abstract, such as the Jeep silhouette in the windscreen glass, or the hiker in the rear window. Our favourite was the tachometer markings rendered as a splash of mud. Cute.

The Trailhawk is a well-equipped vehicle, but so it should be given the $43,000 pricetag. Even then, it misses autonomous emergency braking which RACV believes should be fitted to every new vehicle. The infotainment system, while chock full of features, was a bit of a chore to use. Pairing phones was much harder than it should be and the loading of the phone directory was slow at times. The same inertia could also be noticed in the sound system when switching from reverse to drive.

Vision in the Renegade is not great, with large pillars and relatively small rear windows being an issue when either parking or overtaking. The reversing camera and blind-spot warning systems that are standard in the Trailhawk are essential in this respect, and fortunately they are both excellent in their performance.

Riding high

Getting in and out of the car, particularly for front-seat occupants, is tricky at times, more so if you’re very tall. However the cabin is roomy, with particularly good head room both front and rear, although rear legroom is a bit tight. Rear-vision issues aside, the elevated ride height of the Trailhawk gives you that high-up view of the road you normally only expect on big SUVs. The whole feel of the cabin in design and materials is youthful and funky, which may not be to everyone’s taste but I thought it was coherently done.

On the road, the Trailhawk is no sports car. The acceleration is relaxed, the steering is light and the handling is a little wallowy around tight bends, but it’s exactly as you’d expect in a vehicle like this and in some respects a whole lot better in that it’s soft and comfortable to drive. Even though it’s based on an Italian car, the Fiat 500X, the driving experience is best described as ‘American’, which I guess is a mark of success.

ANCAP has not yet rated the 4×4 Trailhawk variant of the Renegade, however the front-wheel-drive version scored five stars when it was rated in 2016.

For all its flaws, this is an easy car to like once you get used to the peccadilloes. It has presence. If you lean towards practicality, something like Mazda CX-5 might be more your cup of tea, but for a bold statement the Renegade Trailhawk is well worth a look.

Style

Exterior Features

Is it really hard to tell a Jeep apart from everything else on the road? Yes, all SUVs look alike, but from the back, no one can copy the X accents on the taillights, a signature of Jeep’s heritage style and its roots starting in the military. Details like that are what give the Jeep Renegade a bold and rugged look, but it’s not without its luxury. A My Sky sunroof is available for a little fresh air when going off-road.

Some of the exterior features on the 2017 Jeep Renegade are automatic headlamps (standard on all but the Sport trim), standard halogen lamps with turn-off time delay, available power heated mirrors, deep tint sunscreen glass (standard on all but the Sport trim), and of course the reconfigurable option to remove the My Sky panels. The Renegade is available with 16, 17, or 18-inch wheels depending on the trim, drivetrain, and buyer preferences. For personal styling, buyers can choose from about nine colors.

Interior Features

Jeep is notorious for putting the luxury features on its high end trims. They’re affordable, but can you put a price on driving in style and comfort? Leather trim and other upscale features like a heated steering wheel are only available on the Limited trim, as is automatic temperature control. Convenient features such as the electronic vehicle information center are standard across the lineup, and so is the cluster display (varying size and color based on trim) and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

For cargo space, cargo tie down loops are a lineup standard. There is also the option for roof racks that fit nicely with the sunroof. Depending on the trim, 60/40 and 40/20/40 split-fold rear seats are available for changing seating arrangements and opening up storage space. Buyers have the option of three colors to customize the look of the interior.
